50+164 Some bookkeeping from my Southern Expedition 2011

First off I need to say sorry to my readers that I have not been keeping up with my so called daily blog as it has been about 3 weeks since my last post.

Between getting caught up around the house and my business and also finding time to review products for my BBQ blog this page had found itself on the back burner.

I will try to keep this page as active as I can in the future.

Today I sat down with all of my fuel receipts from my Southern Expedition and did some accounting work with them.

I had not driven down south since the 1993 and of course since then fuel costs have been a lot higher than at that time and the past few years I had taken a big bird to go visit my parents in Florida. A single Airfare to Florida return would cost in the area of $300.00

But since I was doing a BBQ tour on the way with stops in NC, Georgia and a few spots in Florida along with the fact I had  my Masterbuilt smoker to pick up, driving down made a lot of sense.

I really enjoyed the drive, yes I was alone in the car but with the tunes rockin’ and no one along to slow me down or try to speed me up, it was very enjoyable.

Here is my Fuel Expenses for the trip in my 2003 VW Jetta TDI, being a Diesel the economy was excellent except in the mountains where my Turbo boost shut down due to the high altitude.

Not to confuse you all, but in Canada we are using the metric system so there are some calculations done.

1 mile = 1.61 km

1 US Gallon = 4.5 litres

But as you can see I did put totals for  miles, km’s, Litre’s and Gallons

And here are some screen shots from my GPS after I got back home to Oshawa after the trip.

It should be noted that I had reset the trip stats on the GPS just after I started my trip so the km do not quite add up.

and if your wondering about the very very high Max Speed on the GPS, that was when I took my GPS on an airplane 2 years ago, and I will not be resetting the max speed on my GPS since I think that is so cool 🙂

50+103 Happy New Year

2010 don’t let the door hit you on the way out. I am ready for the challenges that will be coming in 2011.

Was 2010 the best year ever?, no, there were some problems to over come and some are on going and I had to say good bye to a friend that was my accountant, Mark Hendrikx we miss you!

My Sports teams in Toronto are still having their share of problems  except for the Argos that had a good year though I am not much of a football fan.

But I also had a lot of fantastic things happened to me in 2010.

I ventured into writing again after a layoff of 6 months and also found social networking which has helped my business as I found some new customers through it, but more important I made some friends that are great people.

While some people do not agree with how social networking is taking over in the communication world. this past year has opened my eyes to it and I have made friends all over the world from North Carolina to New Jersey to Georgia to California  and far away places like the Netherlands and even some close by in Newcastle and Whitby.

Even though I will never meet most of them and some I will I hope, all of them are dear friends and will continue to be for years to come.

Happy New Year !!!

50+96 Merry Christmas Everyone

Here we are on Christmas day where most people are still opening their gifts and having a family get together with Turkey and all the fixin’s

However since I am of German decent we in our family celebrate in the traditional German way by having our Christmas all on the 24th.

We started out by yesterday by opening our stockings in the morning, and then I did some Christmas cooking and baking using some fantastic Chritsmas recipes passed on to me by my friend Cyndi Allison.

For the first time I was preparing a traditional Christmas Turkey Dinner  which I started the night before by brining a fresh turkey with this recipe and also a Southern Holiday Cranberry Salad Desert that was delightful  and the on the 24th I baked some really tasty Southern Cranberry Cookies and finally cooking the bird using this method.

Thank-you Cyndi your recipes made a success of my efforts and all 10 of us thoroughly enjoyed the great food.

We ate about an hour later than was hoped since my grandson needed to be back home to get ready for his Christmas the next day but he did not mind staying longer than was expected.

The meal was a great success (even though I forgot to make the stove top stuffing, but we did have 2 kinds of scalloped potatoes and fresh carrots which were wonderful)

It was 11:30pm  by the time we had finished opening all of the gifts (we were shooting for 9pm) and I was exhausted by that point since I did not get to sleep til 5 am on the 24th getting the house ready for Christmas and making a run out to Walmart for last minute recipe needs at 4am, yes I said am! and the store was quite busy even including a woman that was shopping with a wide awake 10 year old girl, that made me shake my head just a bit.

As I write this at 11am on Christmas day there is a welcomed calm in the house and I will use today to tidy up and get ready for another family get together at my In-Laws on the 26th, always a fun day there.

Merry Christmas to all of my readers and enjoy the day.

50+91 Oh Christmas Tree

Well our tree is up, we retired the artificial tree that we have used every year for I think about the last 15 years and my wife picked out a new on for this year.

It is up now and as you can see the pets are already making their shelter underneath it.

Oh Christmas Tree Oh Christmas Tree, Please do not let our pets go pee on thee!

50+77 Snowin’, Blowin’ and BBQin’??? Yup!

Today we had our first major snowfall of the season that managed to cause some havoc on the roads and force yours truly to unlock the shed to pull out my snow-blower (yes Cyndi I found my garage keys, they were tucked in the back seat of the VW)

But since it was still snowing I needed to make some dinner for my two boys and their sons. So lets see what would go good on a day like today?……. I know Steak on the BBQ!

Call me nuts but since I am a full member of the Winter Grillers Group I had to show them that I was worthy of their acceptance.

The steaks were fantastic and I will talk about that more in my Oshawa Ogre’s Views, News & BBQ’s blog maybe later tonight or tomorrow, just check to see if it is there.

After dinner I drove the boys home and I will tell you the roads were quite slippery, I may need to take my all-seasons off and get some snow tires or my Jetta.

Did not take too long to clear the driveway and my walk-ways as the snow was very light and fluffy.

50+67 Hmmm What am I thankful for?

Even though Thanksgiving has come and gone here in Canada, our neighbours to the south are celebrating theirs today.

Since a majority of my online friends are in America I thought I would take a few minutes to say a few thank-you’s.

(please note of course I am thankful for all of my Canadian family and friends that goes with out saying, but since this is US Thanksgiving I will direct my thoughts to the States.

  • Thankful that my father that is in Florida is recovering from his medical issues after giving us all a scare.
  • Thankful my mother is there to help him recover.
  • Thankful to the people that I have become friends with on twitter that have helped me so much with my writing including
  • Thankful to the companies that have sent me product to review on my other blog Oshawa Ogre’s Views, News & BBQ’s. It is a great gig to be able to sample products from all over the US (and Canada too) and spread the word to the masses using this fad that some say would never last (the Internet)
  • Thankful to the BBQ community at large as I have found them to be the best group of people on the planet, willing to share information and ready to help each other in ways that in this crazy world do not seem to be the norm but it is a wonderful thing to be a part of.
  • Thankful having great friends also on twitter and facebook that keep me amused and sometimes abused but in a fun way.
  • Thankful that you are allowing me into your life for a few minutes every now and then and that for some reason you find my musings interesting.

You will notice other than my Mom and Dad that I have not named names and the reason for this is that I know I would forget to mention a person that is very important to me, just as all of the others are and do not want anyone to feel slighted.

You all know who you are and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!
