50+79 Glad I am not in London Ontario at the moment – Oh Snow!

Well here in Oshawa we have only had the one snow storm a couple of days a go accounting for at the most about 3 inches (7.5 cm) of the white stuff and it was no problem to move off our roads, drive and walkways.

I have a friend Jay aka @Jake_Alberts on twitter that runs Jake Alberts a little company in London Ontario that makes a great Sauce/Glaze that is fantastic on both meat and ice cream (you heard me, it is true!)

He sent out a tweet today saying that they had 30 inches of snow in 24 hours and more since, as a matter of fact they are reporting that London had 106 cm  (40 inches) dumped on them from this system  My goodness that is almost 4 feet of snow!

Just to compare London only had 100 cm of snow all of last year!

For those wondering London is about 3 or 4 hours to the west of us here in Oshawa, and just an hour or so east of Detroit.

This is a picture Jay posted today taken AFTER he had already cleaned the car off before.

It will be interesting to see how much snow we get her in Oshawa this year, regardless I hope most of it falls in late January when i will be soaking up the sun in Florida.

50+67 Hmmm What am I thankful for?

Even though Thanksgiving has come and gone here in Canada, our neighbours to the south are celebrating theirs today.

Since a majority of my online friends are in America I thought I would take a few minutes to say a few thank-you’s.

(please note of course I am thankful for all of my Canadian family and friends that goes with out saying, but since this is US Thanksgiving I will direct my thoughts to the States.

  • Thankful that my father that is in Florida is recovering from his medical issues after giving us all a scare.
  • Thankful my mother is there to help him recover.
  • Thankful to the people that I have become friends with on twitter that have helped me so much with my writing including
  • Thankful to the companies that have sent me product to review on my other blog Oshawa Ogre’s Views, News & BBQ’s. It is a great gig to be able to sample products from all over the US (and Canada too) and spread the word to the masses using this fad that some say would never last (the Internet)
  • Thankful to the BBQ community at large as I have found them to be the best group of people on the planet, willing to share information and ready to help each other in ways that in this crazy world do not seem to be the norm but it is a wonderful thing to be a part of.
  • Thankful having great friends also on twitter and facebook that keep me amused and sometimes abused but in a fun way.
  • Thankful that you are allowing me into your life for a few minutes every now and then and that for some reason you find my musings interesting.

You will notice other than my Mom and Dad that I have not named names and the reason for this is that I know I would forget to mention a person that is very important to me, just as all of the others are and do not want anyone to feel slighted.

You all know who you are and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

50+48 More fallout re Monica Gaudio and Cooks Source Magazine

I find this whole Content Theft Brewhaha not only entertaining but so darned important.

Where does it go from here?

For those that do not know what I am talking about you can read yesterdays blog post 50+47 and the story I wrote on it at my other blog Oshawa Ogre’s Views, News & BBQ’s

I can update you on a few points…

First off Monica is  overwhelmed by the attention that she has received from this and has not received any further communication from Cooks Source since Tuesday when this all started.

This is Monica Gaudio’s Live Journal Blog site where this all started.

Cooks Source Magazines facebook page has been flooded with visitors going from just over 100 “friends” to a total of almost 5000 as of this writing but apparently (not confirmed authentic) they have opened a new facebook page Cooks Source Mag in which they say that….

And also on one of those comment page they say that they original page had been hacked and that the “previous regime had been removed”

But later in the thread as you see below, they are saying that they are only seeking a name change., I had read that Judith Griggs is not just the editor but also an owner, so if that is true I would doubt she would be going anywhere. But I also find it hard to believe that they will be seeking a name change, when it would be easier to issue a huge apology and try to use the attention they have brought upon themselves to do some good, though maybe it is too late for that.

Also too one of the heroes in this mess is the 2nd Street Bakery Co. that quickly pulled their ads from Cooks Source Magazine and as you can see in this screen shot, they have been paid back in kindness also getting many more “likes” than they had or could hope for and people were wanting to send them cash, to which the small little business asked for them to donate to a foodbank or charity of their choice. but with all of the well wishers they have also asked that they want to put this behind them and instead of answering all the phone calls and e-mails they want to be able to run their business with out further disruption.

One of the main points Monica has wanted to be made clear is that she wanted all of the friends of hers to take the high road and not take this out on the advertisers of the magazine.

As I said earlier what happens now, Does she file suit against Cooks Source? Will they be put out of business? What lessons will be learned? Will the interweb community rally behind a writer when this happens again?

Time will tell.

Updated…

The new facebook site for Cooks Source it appears had been hacked if you look at this screen shot…

Also I would like to direct you to a great piece written by Edward Champion, his blog piece

The Cooks Source Scandal: How a Magazine Profits on Theft

50+47 The day the Bloggers and Writers fought back against Content Theft

Today I sat in front of my computer screen and was amazed at how quickly the twitter and face book community rallied behind the cause of a food blogger named Monica Gaudio that had content ripped off by a content stealing food site Cooks Source Magazine and the story went viral in moments and over 3000 people went to the mag or should I say rag to air their displeasure.

I will not go onto great detail here as I wrote about this in my other blog site Oshawa Ogre’s Views, News & BBQ’s go there and you get the background of the story.

I will however just offer some of my opinions on what happened today.

As I have found out in the past few months the food blogger community along with the BBQ community are second to none when it comes to respecting and helping each other, Our passion for what we do is huge and though we will not get rich from what we do we can be satisfied with the friendships and respect that we all have for one another.

People that we do not know personally but yet we know each others personalities and share in their dreams and ambitions, it is like one large support group and when one of us is hurt we rally around them, and that is what happened today.

2nd Street Baking Co. a small Bakery in Turners Falls, MA was an advertiser in that magazine and has done the right thing and pulled their ads from them even though they pre-paid and doubt that they will see any of that money returned. but their fans have increased a lot and they will be supported in new better ways. Click on the pictures below to see it full size, I know with my eyes I need to click.

My message that I posted on their page along with some others

It was a good day for the little guy, we all combined into one huge voice and we were heard LOUD & PROUD
